Square Enix to develop hardware?

Square Enix president Yoichi Wada hinted in an interview today with Nikkei Business Online that the game company may be expanding into the realm of hardware. Specifically praising the success of the Nintendo DS and the iPod, Wada spoke of a collaboration with Taito. Square Enix acquired Taito, a company experienced in the production of arcade hardware and creators of the TypeX line of PC hardware, last fall. In the interview, Wada stated "In our talks with Taito, ideas for an actual physical product have come up. In any case, we will be releasing some 'thing.' It's interesting in that it's not the sort of thing you expect from Square Enix." It is uncertain just what this "some 'thing'" is... perhaps a game platform, accessory, or some new medium entirely. Wada went on to add "You really have to dig deep within yourself to produce something new. You can't force it. We must change. Fortunately, we're financially prepared to handle change." I'm kinda sure it's 'just' a FF-themed PS2 controller or something, but we'll see. Game consoles are just something too big, rly. Then again, it might also be a FF-ish arcade game. |

I don't know... it sounds to me like their pretty desperate to move away from FF and expand their fanbase to new franchises. FF won't always be their money maker... the recent complaints of FF fans have shown that. I don't think this will have anything to do with FF. |
