Square Enix on next-gen gaming

At a third-party developer conference on Thursday, Square-Enix president Yoichi Wada listed some of the benefits of of next-gen consoles (i.e. the PS3) always being online. While some of the points he made did sound like a good thing, others are worrying. Wada commented on the possibilities of "trial chapters" of games being made avaiable over PS3's online setup... essentially downloadable demos of games that would feature a complete mission. Players could download the first chapter of a game for free, try it, and then pay for rest, much like the episodic format of Square-Enix's mobile game, Before Crisis. Also mentioned was the proliferation of in-game advertising. With the PS3's always-online feature, in-game ads can now be place in games that are not neccessarily online-centric. What this may mean for gamers, unfortunately, is that you might be seeing Red Bull ads popping up in Kingdom Hearts 3. A third topic was software updates, and it was implied that Square-Enix may be choosing to favor downloadable software patches over extensive bug testing before a game is released. Granted, not all but can and will be caught before a game's release... but patch releases take time. So will next-gen come to mean episodic game content, rotating in-game ads, and months of waiting for new patch releases? Only time will tell. Source: Joystiq.com Add to Digg |

Ill overlook this, just this once. Trial chapters does sound intriguing, though to be honest im not bothered with PS3s online capabilities. |

For god's sake, what is the frickin' point with all this permanently online rubbish they keep making us do. In the end it means one thing....MONEY. And making you spend it. They'll find someway to use it to con people out of a few extra pennies. I guess it's not like we'll be paying £500 for the machine...oh wait...yes we are. |

'Free', you say? Great, that means I can buy all those extra parts I need to play my games, since the PS3 won't have them. .... Sony needs to die. Anyone wanna join to infiltrate their HQ and take 'em down? |

Why bother? They seem to be doing a great job of slowly killing themselves without outside intervention. |
