FF7 Blamed for murder/kidnapping... Gamers ask "WTF?"

In yet another instance of seriously disturbed individuals giving video games a bad name, and the media jumping on the scent of blood, comes this little tidbit from Germany.

It seems that two 17 year old boys from Tessin, Germany were arrested over the weekend for breaking into a home and stabbing the couple who lived there to death. These fine, upstanding members of society (i.e. deranged and psycologically unstable) then apparently kidnapped a 15 year old girl and held her hostage for an hour before giving themselves up.

So what's the connection to FF7, you may ask? The idiots called themselves Reno and Sephiroth. And, what a shock, police found a copy of FF7 installed on their computers (Now, seriously, who didn't see that one coming? It wouldn't be news if video games weren't somehow involved...).

Naturally, the German media has jumped on this turn of events, calling Final Fantasy VIII a "Killerspiele" (or "killer game" for you non-German speakers). Which just goes to show that even games with almost zero blood are not immune to media backlash and public panic.

Oh, yes... and one more thing I'd like to point out. THE GAME IS 10 FRIGGIN' YEARS OLD, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Living in the past much, Germany?

Some links to German sites carrying the story for you all to peruse:

Das sind die Opfer der Killer-Schüler!
Killerspiele - Final Fantasy gehört jetzt auch dazu

Get a life assholes. The game is almost 10 years old.

Fucking retarded assholes. What kind of idiots would name themselves Reno and Seph? Honestly, I hated the game, but I hate these idiots even more. I mean really, who could imitatate the awesomeness of Reno and Seph? No one. They need to get a life. Next thing you know, there'll be bankrobbers with the names Seifer, Fuujin, and Rajin. Mean little retarded cunts.

haha germany sucks. as much as this happens, I've yet to see something really bad come out of it. It doesn't surprise me that the media would jump on the first thing they could think of, but unless they ban the game in the country, then it isn't really a big deal.

Interesting how they show NO footage from FF7, which is at the root of this whole media mess. They delve into AC for a few moments, and then move on to first person shooters.

Oh yeah. Didn't you know. There's a real close link between RPGs and first person shooters.

FF7 killed someone. No...two psychos who played the game waaaay to much killed someone.

HE'S TELLING ME TO KILL THINGS!!!

Seriously, do you think they'll show pictures like that when trying to discuss "evidence" on how Final Fantasy turns children into murderous lunatics?

What a bunch of retard wannabe's, I bet they were playing FF7 at the time and decided to blame it on that. When i seen this article i cracked up cause FF7 would count to be the most non violent rpg game. Those kids should get a life there so stupid. I bet the girl who got kidnaped was named Aeris lol.

I wnat to know why they used those names. After all, Reno was sent to stop Sephiroth. Or did they just like those characters?

It's sad to see such a game with so little violence being called a Killerspiele. Only two characters die, and one of them is a psychotic villain. Unfortunately, any killing is a cause fir concern and when there is a link to a popular game (even if it is a decade old) people are bound to get riled up and lose their senses.

From what I read, they were good students and leaders of some computer-related club at school. Not your average loner type. And based on the odd naming, I doubt they were acting out some role-playing game, otherwise they would have fought each other, not the victims. Hopefully the real cause will be found before FFVII takes too much unnecesary blame.

They better have enough money to sue Square Enix cause they wont win over a small thing.

I don't think they can sue; there's no proof that the game led them to do the killings. They probably got the idea elsewhere and decided top use those names just because they liked (or didn't like) the game/ characters.

SE probably has the money to get good enough lawyers to win the case anyway.

If Take Two has managed to stay allive through all their legal troubles, I don't think we need to worry much about a company as big as Square Enix when it comes to frivilous lawsuits.

This would all be funnier if an Electro magnetic rod and a 7 foot masamune was involved. It's rather lame that they didn't do anything to impersonate Reno or Spehiroth. Not even a cosplay outfit. If you're going to kill someone using the name of a video game character, do it right.
