German gaming site Gamefront is reporting that Square Enix has announced that the Japanese online service for multi-player mode in the Gun Action-RPG, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, will be terminated on September 29, 2006. Aftter that date, online multi-player battlers will no longer be possible. A more detailed article reguarding this news has been posted on the PlayOnline website, the official website of Square Enix's online games. A cursory translation seems to indicate that while the multi-player mode is being disabled, the game may still have some online elements. If and when a more accurate translation becomes available, we'll let you know. Source: Gamefront, PlayOnline Add to Digg |

This doesn't bother me really, mainly because I wouldn't be able to use the online feature and because I didn't there was going to be one. Ah well I guess it would have been a nice feature for those that could use it.

Dirge of Cerberus Japan only? Please tell me that was a lie, a joke or a lack of knowledge.

No, no... Dirge of Cerberus will be coming to North America on August 22nd. But the online part of the game was Japan-only. They removed it for the overseas release, and now they're dumping at least some of the Japanese online stuff, too. |

Holy shit... that was quick. Anyone know WHY they dropped it so quickly? I find this worrying... |

I wouldn't find it worrying if I were you, maybe they've just realised it wasn't going to end up quite as good as they'd hoped so they changed it before everyone realises it's poo. We don't want another FFXII on our hands now do we?

... What's wrong with Final Fantasy XII? :alarmed: |

Precursor for a re-release in Japan, perhaps? The overseas version, after all won't have the online service, but it will have a boatload of improvements. Could be that they're going to release the "international" version a bit early due to that, in which case shutting down the online service would make at least some sense. And I'd hardly call it quickly... they've given 3 months notice.
Indeed, what's wrong with XII? It's been garnering great reviews in Japan. |

I meant as in the release date lsipping back every ten seconds, I guess it was a little confusing. Well TBH I haven't seen much of it (XII) myself but there's plenty of tales of woe on the t'Internet saying how bad the combat system is, there was plenty of tweaking had to be to it, this being one the reaosns it was put back....again. Seeing as I can't use this online stuff I'd rather not have it and get it out quicker, not have it put back by months only to add on a feature I couldn't use in the first place.

erm... Ok, you've lost me. Are we talking about XII or DoC? Because neither of them will have online modes when they come out overseas... The delay with DoC was due to removal of online play and near-total revamping of the battle system. And FFXII... meh, I don't know why the fuck that one took so long, but it had nthing to do with an online mode, because there never was one to begin with. |

I was talking about XII. I wa saying that I'd rather DoC not have this bonus stuff, that way the launch date doesn't run the risk of being put back quite as much; which is what happened with FFXII. Get me? |

Final Fantasy XII was delayed constantly due to the constant shifting of head staff remembers due to resignations from the company on some people's part, and production falters due to the extreme changes required to balance out the game. It had nothing to do with adding "bonus stuff".
I meant it was quick for them to drop the online service. The game hasn't been out very long, even in Japan, and it's strange to see it being completely dropped. I can only assume it wasn't doing too well. |

I'm not really worried about DoC's launch date, to be honest. It's been set to a specific date for months now... and if you look back, the U.S. release date hasn't changed that many times because it was TBA for so long... unlike FFXII.
That's true. It's only been out in Japan since end of January. The online mode didn't even last a year. |

The online service didn't last very long, did it? Ah well; doesn't bother me. I dislike online games anyhow. If I'm going to buy a game, I'll always make sure it has an extensive and rewarding offline story mode/quest. |

As long as it's out in the enxt year and not before Septemebr, I have no money until then.
