The first version update for the Final Fantasy XI: Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion, scheduled to take place in mid-July, was reported a while back to let players breed and raise their own chocobo. More details on chocobo raising have now been posted on the official Final Fantasy XI website.

Initial chocobo breeds will include:
- the Destrier (black in color, bred for use in the calvary)
- the Courser (generally yellow, rarely red in color, a large chocobo bred for scouting and speed, they've become an everyday mount)
- the Palfrey (blue or yellow in color, this mid-size chocobo is bred for the desert)
- the Jennet (yellow or green in color, this chocobo is bred for reduced size to accomodate Tarutarus)
- the Rounsey (a mid-sized chocobo with an unpredictable temperment)

Along with breeding their own chocobo, players will also be able to call their chocobo at any time, anywhere chocobo riding is permitted. Chocobos to be bred will initially be available in yellow, and two other unspecified colors, and more colors will be added in later updates.

The chocobos that players raise will also have different attributes depending on how they are raised, and, like rental chocobos, will be able to dig.

This news make me really wish I could play Final Fantasy XI. The number of new layers they manage to add to the game with each update has always impressed me, and this one is especially note-worthy.

Anyone have a loan of a credit card..? :p

I wonder if this will lead to a new industry in the world of FFXI? I'm sure someone out there would pay for video of chocobos... er... breeding.

damned dial up. i couldn't play the game even if i had it. i've done my research like a good girl, and there is no way we can get anything faster than dial up at this point in time. our local phone lines won't support high speed, our road doesn't have a cable line, and we can't get satellite (approx $1200 in equipment, plus $70 a month)

I did. :)

I've heard rumors regarding chocobo raising for some time now, and I'm glad to see it's finally coming through; that should be fun.
