FFXIII and FF Versus XIII details revealed

The July 2006 issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly contains an interview with Shinji Hashimoto, Yoshinori Kitase and Tetsuya Nomura, and reveals some brand spanking new info on the Fabula Nova Crystallis project.

Some of the more interesting points that are mentioned:

-Each game will be it's own story. While they will have a common mythology, each game will have it's own clear ending, and the characters from one game will not meet characters from another.

-When designing the female character seen in the FF XIII screenshots, Nomura was asked to design a 'female version of Cloud'. She is described as 'strong and independent' and 'not that feminine'.

-XIII will use the Active Time Battle system, but the battles will have less wait time than in previous Final Fantasy games.

-The team from Kingdom Hearts will be working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and the game will have a battle system that will incorperate ideas from traditional FF games, Kingdom Hearts, and other games.

-When asked about the main character of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the reply was that the trailer for Versus would open with a quote from Shakespeare about how there is no absolute good or evil.

-FFXIII will use the PS3 controller's motion sensing feature in some way.

loool, already people have complained she looked too much like older Nomura characters. Apparently, that was the big idea

OMG, SHOCK!

FFXIII is ripping off the good aspects of the other ones and sacrificing its own identity to try and shift a few more units.

it's gonna stink.

Oooh ooooh OOOOOH. Now that's some news that got me needing to just my undies. I'm looking far more forward to FFXIII than XII.

And THAT does sound interesting. Give me a main character with some bollocks. kthx.

I like the Shakespeare quote. And the bit about Nomura's character design made me lawl.

Still on the fence about whether these are going to be any good, though. It's kind of odd that they're apparently setting these in the same world but not having the characters meet each other. Guess we'll see how it goes.

Well, an earlier article mentioned that the bars on the female character's shoulder signified rank and social status. It's possible that in the FFXIII world the social classed are isolated. The woman may be of, say, a military class, while the man is from some type of aristrocracy. Thus they don't intermingle.

Interesting.

The more I think about this news, the more I hope the Shakespeare quote they selected as an introduction will be indicative of the content of the games. I'm getting tired of RPGs that rehash the same old tired clichés about good against evil. Here's hoping that FFXIII represents something more substantial.

Exactly my thoughts. Hopefully they'll be able to create something different - and actually be able to pull it off.

An anti-hero would certainly be a nice change of pace for the lead character...

Problem with anti-heroes is that no matter how evil they are, they'll always finish a story properly. Well, usually always. Plus, when you play an evil character long enough, he'll turn good in your eyes anyways.

I don't really care if the character is still something of a hero, as long as they don't try to make him perfect by the end. And as long as his flaw isn't that he whines on and on and on like Tidus did.

That's true, but not necessarily a bad thing. Take Kain from the Legacy of Kain series. He's self serving, arrogant, egomaniacal, sadistic and a cold blooded killer. By the time LoK Defiance ends, we admire Kain as a character, but he doesn't lose those properties which make him such an evil bastard. It's capable to successfully pull off an anti-hero, I think.
