While it isnt an official word by Square Enix, one of their notable employees, Yoshinori Kitase, has been speaking about the feasibility of remaking Final Fantasy VII.

The technology available today lends itself to the idea of a remake of the legendary game but the manpower and development time would still be considerably long.

Kitase spoke on the subject:

“If it were possible that we had all the right facilities and the right environment to be able to make and prepare a Final Fantasy VII remake within a year, we’d very much like a go at it,”

“But even Final Fantasy XIII has taken over three and a half years to create. If we were to recreate Final Fantasy VII with the same level of graphical detail as you see in Final Fantasy XIII, we’d imagine that that would take as much as three or four times longer than the three and a half years it has taken to put this Final Fantasy together. So it’s looking pretty unrealistic.

“But if any such situation came about, by any remote chance, then yes, we’d do it”.

When the next generation of consoles come out and the graphics capabilities are even higher and even more work needs to go into creating the 3d models and what have you, how will they cope? At the moment, they can't stick too many characters or towns or cities in because it would be too much hassle, next gen are we just going to have a bloke sitting in a room for thirty hours?

Seems like as the graphics improve everything else is taking a backwards step.

I don't think graphics are all too important in a game; rather, more time should be spent refining other elements of a game.

I was just going to say "The longer they wait, the harder it will be." so I'm not sure what they're waiting for. just make it for the wii or something.

Haha for the Wii would be an awesome move.

That said, they are making Dragon Quest X for the Wii, so nothing is impossible.
