Zidane Tribal is a member of Tantalus, a gang of thieves based in the city of Lindblum. On their orders, he sets off with them on a mission to kidnap Princess Garnet of the kingdom of Alexandria, but when the attempt goes horribly wrong, the airship that carried both the theives and Princess Garnet herself away from the castle crash-lands in the middle of a forest. Their airship in ruins, they are stranded.
A flirtacious and playful fellow, Zidane knows nothing of his origins. Raised from a young age by Baku, the leader of the Tantalus theives, he longs to know who is is and where he came from. The truth, he later discovers, is perhaps not what he had invisioned, nor what he wanted.
Created as an Genome, Zidane's whole purpose of being was originally to replace Kuja as the "Angel of Death". He was created by a man named Garland, a refugee from the doomed world of Terra who wished to wipe out life on the world of Gaia, so that it could be recolonized by survivors of Terra. The Genomes were created as physical vessels for the souls of the people of Terra. Zidane and Kuja, as well as a female Genome named Mikoto, however, were different. Unlike the other Genomes, who would not come to possess a soul until Gaia was ready to receive them, Zidane and Kuja were given a soul of their own. Their purpose was to accelerate the destruction of life on Gaia. However, having a soul left them mortal. Unlike the other Genomes, they would eventually die.
When Kuja learned of this, and discovered that Zidane was meant to replace him when he died, he stole Zidane, a mere child at the time, and abandoned him on Gaia, near Lindblum. It was there that he was found by Baku.
