Captain of the Pluto Knights of Alexandria, Steiner is is unflinchingly loyal to the royal family, and takes his duty of protecting them very seriously. When Princess Garnet is "kidnapped" by the Tantalus gang and then refuses to return to Alexandria when he arrives to rescue her, Steiner makes an uneasy truce with Zidane and joins him in order to watch over the Princess.
Though initially he reguards his duty as being more important than his own life, and holds it above all else, he gradually comes to realize that there is more to life than duty. When confronted with the truth about Queen Brahne and her role in the attacks on Alexandria's neighbors, Steiner is forced to re-evaluate much of what he has long held dear, and learns that he must think for himself rather than blindly following orders.
In spite of his dislike for Zidane and most of his Tantalus allies, Steiner hold a great deal of respect for young Vivi and his magical talents. He is also more than fond of his one-time rival, General Beatrix, head of the Alexandrian Army, with whom he eventually falls in love.
