Garnet Til Alexandros XVII is the princess and only heir to the throne of the kingdom of Alexandria. When her mother, the once-noble Queen Brahne, begins to grow more and more power-hungry, Garnet resigns herself to running away to Lindblum to seek help from Regent Cid Fabool IX, who was a great friend of her father. However, mid-way through her escape, a group of theives calling themselves Tantalus attempt to kidnap her (in fact, acting on orders from Regent Cid, to escort her safely to Lindblum), a prospect that she finds quite suitable to her needs. Assuming the alias "Dagger" she travels with Zidane an his allies to find a way to stop her mother.
Along the way, however, she learns much about her past that was long hidden from her. Garnet, in truth was born not to the king and queen or Alexandria. Rather she was born Sara, to a woman named Jane, a Summoner of the village of Madain Sari. When Madain Sari was attacked and destroyed by Garland, Garnet and her mother fled in a small boat.
The escape was hindered by a storm at sea, and along the way, Garnet's mother died. Garnet, however, survived, and eventually the tiny boat drifted into Alexandria's harbor. The king and queen, having just lost their own child to illness, realized that the infant Garnet was identical to their own daughter, and decided to raise her as their own. For much of her life, Garnet was afraid of the summoning powers she had, the legacy of her unknown past. However, when the Eidolons she possess were removed from her body, she becomes determined to use her remaining powers to stop her adoptive mother's abuse of power.
