As they say, power corrupts and Final Fantasy 9 expresses that clearly. As the great kingdoms of Gaia have obtained power, it follows that corruption has shown its face, and the power struggle has begun.
Final Fantasy IX starts as the nation of Alexandria sits at the forefront of the war. Under the command of Queen Brahne, the kingdom's forces have been rallied against their neighbors. Her demands are simple... complete control and absolute power, or destruction of those who oppose her.
Seeing what her mother has become, Princess Garnet of Alexandria flees. Her method of escape, though unorthodox, is successful, and she soon, quite intentionally, finds herself in the hands of a gang of bandits. In need of shelter and assistance, they travel to the neghboring kingdom of Lindblum.
The appearance of a mysterious silver-haired sorcerer, however, soon leads them into a much greater battle.
Final Fantasy 9 twists and turns gamers in much the same way as the original.
Released in 2000, many Final Fantasy fans consider Final Fantasy 9 a 'return to the roots' of the series. This is largely due to its clear parallels to the older games released on the NES and SNES consoles. To newcomers to the series who had played the more recent installments, Final Fantasy 9 was a drastic change.
Abandoning the science-fiction and technology-oriented worlds of VII and VIII, Final Fantasy 9 returned gamers to a more simplistic time, where lords ruled from castles, and dragons streaked across the skies.
