The daughter of Lord Godo, the leader of Wutai, Yuffie is young and determined. After Wutai's defeat in the war between Wutai and Shinra (dubbed the "Meaningless War"), her homeland was reduced to little more than a tourist attraction. Though she was far too young to remember what it had once been, a great pride in her heritage drove her to seek out a way to restore Wutai to its former glory. Her solution was materia, the crystallized life energy of the planet and source of all magic.
She began collecting materia anywhere she could find it, in the hopes that it would bring great power to her country. During her travels, she met up with Cloud Strife and the members of Avalanche. After agreeing to join them, she eventually led them to Wutai... where she stripped them of their materia and vanished. The group tracked her down, all the way to the capitol city of Wutai, but when they finally caught up with her, she tricked them once again and ran off.
Unfortunately, her luck was short-lived, as shortly after her escape, she had the misfortune to cross paths with Don Corneo, a leacherous man from the slums of Midgar. Yuffie was taken prisoner, along with Elena, a rookie member of Shinra's Turks. Tied to the face of a cliff, she was helpless to do anything while Cloud and the others were forced to battle Corneo's "pet" monster. With the help of Reno and Rude, two Turks who had come to rescue Elena, Corneo and his "pet" were both killed. Yuffie returned the stolen materia, and joined Cloud and the others in their quest.
