Years ago, Vincent was a member of an elite unit of Shinra known as the Turks. Assigned to the company's residence in Nibelheim, Vincent was witness to the beginning of what would one day endanger the entire planet.
In love with a woman named Lucrecia, Vincent soon found that his affections were not returned. Lucrecia was a scientist in the employ of Shinra Company. She was working closely with Dr. Gast and Hojo on what was termed the Jenova Project, a research project studying the remains of what was believed to be a Cetra, recovered from a 2000 year old layer of rock. When she learned that she was pregnant, she offered her unborn son for research, and Mako and Jenova cells were injected directly into her womb. Though he didn't know who the father was at the time, when Vincent learned of what she was doing, he attempted to talk sense into her, but she refused to listen. Eventually, she gave birth to Sephiroth, and Vincent was told that she herself had died in childbirth.
In the end, Vincent was shot in cold blood by Hojo after confronting him about the use of Lucrecia as a test subject. Near death, his body was used in experiments that eventually resulted in Vincent gaining the ability to transform into powerful, but monsterous, creatures.
Vincent was confined, for a number of years, to a coffin in the basement of the Shinra Mansion at Nibelheim, until eventually, Cloud Strife stumbled upon him. Upon learning that Sephiroth was still alive, Vincent set out with Cloud to stop him and to atone for his inability to prevent it from happening in the first place.
