Cait Sith, a small black cat riding atop a large, mechanical Moogle, was, for a time, employed at the Gold Saucer as a fortune telling robot. When Cloud and the others arrived at the Gold Saucer in search of the Keystone that would open the Temple of the Ancients, Cait Sith offered to join them. His allegiance, however, was short-lived, as he stole the Keystone himself, and turned it over to Shinra's Turks.
Revealed as a spy, Cait Sith demanded that he remain with the group. To enforce this, he provided proof that Shinra was holding Barret's daughter, Marlene, and Aeris' mother, Elmyra, hostage. He therefore accompanied them to to the Temple of the Ancients. Unfortunately, both Sephiroth and Shinra's men had arrived there first. Sephiroth's goal was to obtain the legendary Black Materia, an orb imbued with magic that could destroy the world by summoning Meteor. Shinra's goal was to find a clue that would lead them to the location of the Promised Land.
Upon entering the temple, they found Tseng of the Turks injured at the hands of Sephiroth. Leaving him behind, they made their way deep into the temple. Aeris, being half-Cetra, was able to speak to the spirits inhabiting the temple, and learned that the Temple of Ancients itself was actually the materia, and that by triggering certain mechanisms, it would collapse in on itself and transform into a usable form. But as this would result in whomever triggered the mechanism being crushed, Cait Sith volunteered to be the one to do it.
In part, it was remorse for his earlier betrayal. It was also because, as a robot, he was expendable. Once the temple collapsed, Cloud obtained the black materia, but lost it to Sephiroth shortly thereafter. It wasn't long afterward that the group was joined by a second Cait Sith, controlled by the same person who had been controlling the first.
Later, it was revealed that Reeve, one of Shinra's executives, was actually in control of the Cait Sith robot.
