Barret Wallace is the gruff, loud, and easily-excited leader of Avalanche, a rebel group dedicated to stopping the Shinra Company's continuing assault on the planet. Convinced that Shinra's Mako energy is actually the lifeforce of the planet itself, Avalanche's mission is to put an end to the organization's power hungry ways.
Barret hails from a small mining town called Corel. When Shinra set up a Mako reactor near the town, most of the townspeople were certain that it would bring them prosperity. Unfortunately, they were terribly wrong. The town was burned to the ground by Shinra soldiers, and Barret lost his wife, Myrna, in the fire. He also lost his right arm, and his best friend Dyne, when they were attacked on a cliff just outside of town. Many of Corel's residents perished, including Dyne's wife.
In the aftermath of the town's destruction, Barret found Dyne's infant daughter, Marlene, still alive. He took her from the town, and adopted her, raising her as his own. The people of Corel, however, blamed Barret for what had happened to their friends and families, as he had been one of the strongest supporters of Shinra's plans. Unwelcome in his own home, Barret left, eventually settling in Midgar, where he later became the leader of Avalanche.
