Born to Dr. Gast, a former Shinra scientist, and Ifalna, the last remaining Cetra, Aeris has lived much of her life being persued by Shinra Company's men. When she was a small child, Soldiers dispatched by Shinra came to her home in Icicle Inn on the frozen Great Glacier in the far north. They killed her father, and abducted Aeris and her mother.
For some time, Aeris and Ifalna were reguarded as research specimens by Dr. Gast's former assistant, Professor Hojo. Hojo, a cold and science-minded man, had a particular interest in the two of them, because they were the last remaining people imbued with the blood of the Ancients, or Cetra. As decendants of the Cetra, Hojo believed that they could provide him with the means to enter the "Promised Land", a land filled with vast quantities of Mako Energy... the very energy that Shinra Company was extracting from the planet to use as a power source.
Ifalna, however, escaped, and taking young Aeris with her, ran to the slums of Midgar. It was there that Iflana died, but not before leaving Aeris in the capable hands of a kind woman named Elmyra. Elmyra raised Aeris as her own daughter, and as Aeris grew older, became aware that there was something different about her... something special. When one of Shinra's elite Turks, a man by the name of Tseng, showed up requesting that Aeris be handed over for research, Elmyra refused. It was sheerly by luck that Tseng had developed a fondness for the girl, and did not force her to come with him.
Aeris grew up in the slums, often harassed by Shinra's men, but always managing to stay one step ahead. Much of her time was spent in the ruins of a church not far from her adopted mother's home. And it was in that church that she met Cloud Strife. Shortly after that meeting, she was kidnapped by Shinra and once more found herself in Hojo's clutches. It was a short stay, however, as Cloud and his allies soon came to her rescue.
Free of Shinra, Aeris set out with Cloud and the members of Avalanche as they persued Sephiroth. For Aeris, though, there was something more. Something she could sense, but couldn't quite grasp.
