Materia
Materia in Before Crisis is a necessary item for use in battle. Though its effects are similar to the materia used in Final Fantasy VII, the materia usage system in Before Crisis differs drastically. The highest level any materia can reach is Level 9. Additionally, the player must create most of the materia they used. Rather than obtaining higher level spells as materia levels up, if the player wished to obtain a higher level spell, they must create a higher grade of materia (for example, Cure and Cura are two separate materias). Also, combining certain materia you have created will in turn create Summon Materia.
Materia is created through the use of the player's mobile phone camera. By accessing the Materia menu and choosing "Create Materia", the phone's camera is activated. The goal is to photograph something that contains the predefined colors that will produce new materia. For example, photographing something that is predominantly red will yield a Fire materia. Deeper shades will usually yeild higher grade materia.
Just as in Final Fantasy VII, materia levels up through use. Keeping a materia equipped will allow it to accumulate AP with each battle. Certain objectives will also add to AP. Also, as in Final Fantasy VII, equipped materia can add elemental effects to armor and weapons.
