Once a legendary Shinra Soldier, Sephiroth discovered the truth of his origins and went mad, destroying the small town of Nibelheim. For five years the world thought him dead, and Shinra covered up the circumstances surrounding the events in Nibelheim, but one day, he returned to try to carry out the plans of Jenova... to call forth Meteor to injure the planet, and in doing so become one with the Planet as its Lifestream gathered to heal the wound. His plans were defeated by Cloud and his allies, and he himself was killed.
Sephiroth's death, however, is not the end of him by a long shot. Through Kadaj, who exists as a sort of larval form, Sephiroth is recreated and Cloud is forced to face him once more. In the end, however, despite his great strength and obsession with completing Jenova's plans, he is defeated a second time... though he proclaims, sinisterly, that he will never be a memory.
