Raised on the Sector 7 Plate of Midgar, Denzel lost his parents when the Plate above Sector 7 was dropped onto the Slums below. His father, Eber, was a Shinra employee, and for that reason, he received advance notice of what was going to happen that day. Though Denzel's father intended to evacuate the family to Sector 5, Denzel's mother, Chloe, turned back in order to warn their frinds and neighbors. Denzel was sent ahead to Sector 5 while his father went after her. Neither of them returned.
Though he thought he was safe in Sector 5, it was not to be. When Meteor came, Denzel was still in Midgar, and thus was exposed to the Lifestream as it sprang from deep within the planet to drive back Meteor. It was this exposure that left him with the painful, and generally fatal disease, Geostigma. Eventually, Denzel made his way to the church in Sector 5, and it was here that he was found by Cloud, Tifa, and Marlene.
Denzel longs to be strong like Cloud, so that he can protect the people he cares about. He even tried to join the W.R.O., but was turned down because he was only a child. Although he is infected with a deadly disease, he has not given up hope.
