Two years have passed since the near-destruction of the planet, and Cloud has become very much a loner. Plagued by the guilt of allowing someone he cared deeply for to die at the hands of Sephiroth, he has isolated himself from his friends. Working as a delivery man, Cloud spends a great deal of his time traveling to and from Midgar, but although his guilt and inability to let go of the past have isolated him, he still clings to the friendships he has forged.
Unwilling or unable to forget past events, Cloud stays connected to those he cares about through voice mail. He is never without his phone, even though he never answers it. It is his feelings of guilt and inability that have driven him to his present state. Though he was instrumental in saving the world from Sephiroth and Jenova, he is now convinced that he is of no use to anyone... that even if he tried to help, he would ultimately fail, just as he failed Aeris. He is even unwilling to fight against the disease that has invaded his body.
