The Red Wings, at one time an honorable military unit of powerful airships, has been sent by the kingdom of Baron to obtain the magical Crystals... by any means necessary. Because of this order, Baron's more peaceful neighbors suddenly find themselves under siege as Final Fantasy 4 begins.
As the situation worsens, Cecil Harvey, captain of the Red Wings, begins to question the actions of his king. When he makes his concerns known, he is stripped of his rank and set on a seemingly benign mission. In the Final Fantasy 4 game, appearances, however, can be deceiving, and when Cecil discovers he has been betrayed by the very powers he once served, he must undertake a dangerous journey to discover the truth about the king, about the Crystals, and about himself.
This fourth game of the series was released in 1997 for Super Nintendo and Final Fantasy 4 was originally marketed as Final Fantasy 2 in the U.S. At the time, the second and third games in the series had not been released outside of Japan, and only the most hardcore of fans even knew of their existance.
The game was later rereleased on Sony Playstation, under its original title, in the bundle titled [i]Final Fantasy Chronicles[/i], which also contained a rerelease of another of Square's popular RPGs, Chrono Trigger.
